Hybrid on-demand business intelligence with SQL Azure Reporting

Enterprise-class business intelligence software has become an essential part of many companies’ financial and operational decision-making. As exemplified by preeminent solution providers like IBM and SAS, BI adoption is growing at an exponential rate, mostly catalyzed by faster processors and cheaper data storage for heightened data warehousing and querying initiatives. This has afforded businesses the ability to perform a more intense type of data analysis, or what is known to some as analytics, where vast sets of information are disseminated across the enterprise.

An upshot from the demand for better BI is the need for scalable and well distributed business intelligence tools, to pervade the enterprise even further, instead of limiting it to just a few key analysts, by way of some kind of desktop software. Furthermore, as these same businesses move their data to off-premise cloud storage environments, uninterrupted use of these tools also becomes a concern. Microsoft’s SQL Azure Reporting on-demand service is not only well positioned to address this changing tide, but is already outfitted for hybrid use on and off Azure, Microsoft’s public cloud, to set up companies for the inevitable all-in-the-cloud future.

If you’re familiar with Microsoft SQL Server, you’re most likely also familiar with its SQL Server Reporting Services. Both SQL Azure and SQL Azure Reporting could be considered a toned-down version of SQL Server, and its major reporting component, meaning Reporting Services. In fact, many of the same development tools, like BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio) and SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio), are utilized to deploy reports from ad-hoc queries or stored and tasked database objects.

For those unfamiliar with Reporting Services, I wouldn’t be too concerned, as you can probably use all the web-based tools that ship with a subscription to SQL Azure. That is, at least for the foreseeable future. In the case where you might require a greater flexibility in the design and development of your database objects and reports, on-premise SQL Server might be a welcome addition. However, this might be considered as something of a luxury, as SQL Azure Reporting services is robust enough to address most reporting deliverables, outside of any Analysis Services kind of OLAP and data mining capabilities. But in my experience, there are a very limited set of users in any given company that know how to take advantage of very advanced analytics doings like performing a multi-dimensional analysis, or applying arcane kinds of data mining methods. As alluded to above, SQL Azure Reporting and on-premise SQL Server are well situated to address hybrid concerns like these. As Microsoft continues to expand upon its public cloud offering, you can also expect to see further service options to become available for on-demand database and business intelligence.

Global Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, Yellowfin, is set to release a new native application for the iPhone that CEO Glen Rabie says will “significantly” bolster its growing reputation as a leading provider of Mobile BI.

(PRWEB) March 21, 2012

Global Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, Yellowfin, is set to release a new native application for the iPhone that CEO Glen Rabie says will “significantly” bolster its growing reputation as a leading provider of Mobile BI.

The application, to be officially released in an exclusive media event (Tuesday 3 April Australian EST), is rumored to bring the unique consumer-oriented features and functionality of Yellowfin’s recently released iPad application to the iPhone.

“At Yellowfin, we’re always striving to make fact-based decision-making easier, on any platform; no matter where you are,” said Yellowfin CEO, Glen Rabie. “We’re always thinking about how people like to consume and share information – we want to provide our customers with a product they can engage with on a personal and emotional level. User engagement and gratification are our ultimate goals.”

Development driven and inspired by consumer platforms and technologies

Rabie said that the well-documented trend towards user-friendly enterprise products for analytics – the consumerization of BI and enterprise IT at large – proved a major driving force behind Yellowfin’s decision to undertake the project. He also claimed that many enterprise applications and software products lack appeal, and have an enormous amount to learn from their leisure-time equivalents.

“I can’t understand why so many BI vendors seem intent on condemning their users to such an underwhelming experience,” he said. “People like using Twitter, Facebook and sharing their ideas via StumbleUpon or Digg because it’s easy, fun and social. So naturally we’ve combined those same collaborative capabilities and user-oriented navigability to deliver a product that people will genuinely enjoy using.”

Mobile BI represents BI for all, not just a few

Rabie said that the need to design product functionality for data consumers, rather than report writers, was even more paramount in the context of mobile analytics.

“Organizations are beginning to realize the huge potential and benefits of widespread reporting and analytics – more people with access to understandable and actionable data means better decision-making and ROI for BI projects. The continued proliferation of Mobile BI is part of that trend.”

Rabie added that the focus on information consumption, rather than development, was further intensified when using smartphones as the delivery platform for Mobile BI.

“First of all, no one wants to conduct data analysis on a postage stamp – realistically, the screen size just doesn’t support content development. Further, despite the intense interest in tablets for the consumption of corporate data, smartphones still remain the preferred platform for mobile analytics due to practical and financial reasons.

The forgotten importance of the smartphone for Mobile BI

“It’s simple, more people own smartphones than tablets, and more organizations provide smartphones for employees compared to tablet devices. With this truth – and the proliferation of corporate BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] programs – in mind, smartphones – either corporate issue or personal – still represent the most realistic platform for Mobile BI.”

Dresner Advisory Services’ (DAS) latest Mobile Business Intelligence Market Study”Mobile Business Intelligence Market Study demonstrates a significant increase in interest in the iPad as a Mobile BI platform. But despite the marked jump in iPad-oriented Mobile BI implementations, the iPhone still remains the most widely used device for Mobile BI, with 70 percent of respondents currently receiving mobile analytics via an iPhone, and a further 18 percent planning to deploy iPhone-based Mobile BI initiatives during 2012.

TechTarget’s 2012 Global IT Priorities Survey supports DAS’ findings. The survey discovered that 34 percent of respondents plan to introduce tablets as part of their corporate IT strategies in 2012, up from 18 percent in last year’s study. Despite the substantial increase in planned tablet-based implementations, 35 percent of respondents still planned to implement smartphone-based initiatives in the next 12 months.

Mobile BI: The new platform for BI

Rabie said that regardless of platform priorities and device preferences, the demand for Mobile BI is set to rise.

“At Yellowfin, we fundamentally believe that advances in both consumer and enterprise mobile technologies, in conjunction with shifting working habits and environments, means that a significant proportion of BI will be consumed via mobile devices.

“We also believe that both consumer-oriented and mobile capabilities hold the key to markedly increased and sustained BI user adoption. And sustained user adoption is the best way to achieve ROI for any BI project.”

Yellowfin offers customers the ability to receive mobile analytics out-of-the-box, on any device or platform, via native applications for the iPhone, iPad, Android platform and new HTML 5 integration.

New SAS BI Solution Offers Visual Analytics Interface

0

Posted on : 25-03-2012 | By : admin | In : Analytics

A new in-memory business intelligence solution from SAS offers a highly visual interface to bring analytics to a broader class of users. SAS Visual Analytics is the newest product in the SAS high-performance analytics group.

With SAS Visual Analytics, organizations can:

  • Apply SAS Analytics to massive amounts of data.
  • Visually explore data at the speed of sight.
  • Share fresh insights with everyone, everywhere, via the Web or iPad.

SAS Visual Analytics combines in-memory architecture, intuitive data exploration, Hadoop support and information-delivery options, including the iPad. It is designed specifically for business visualization of big data on inexpensive, nonproprietary hardware.

“The speed of in-memory architecture offers tremendous benefit. Organizations can explore huge data volumes and get answers to critical questions in near-real time,” says Dan Vesset, program vice president of IDC’s business analytics research.  “SAS Visual Analytics offers a double bonus: the speed of in-memory analytics plus self-service eliminates the traditional wait for IT-generated reports. Businesses today must base decisions on insight gleaned from data, and that process needs to be close to instantaneous.”

Beyond BI

“SAS Visual Analytics helps business users to visually explore data on their own,” says SAS CEOJimGoodnight. “But it goes well beyond traditional query and reporting. Running on low-cost, industry-standard blade servers, its high-performance in-memory architecture delivers answers in seconds or minutes instead of hours or days.”

“The core of SAS Visual Analytics is the SAS LASR Analytic Server, which speeds data exploration and visualization.

“This in-memory analytic engine will extend across our software product portfolio, seamlessly applying 35 years of SAS analytics innovation to big data assets,” says Goodnight.

A core component of SAS Visual Analytics, the SAS LASR Analytic Server, uses Hadoop (embedded Hadoop Distributed File System) as local storage at the server for fault tolerance.

The more data used in an analysis, the more accurate the results. This is especially attractive when accuracy is critical in problem solving across big data environments, including both structured and unstructured data.

SAS Visual Analytics includes:

  • SAS LASR Analytic Server—clients communicate with SAS LASR Analytic Server for calculations on the data resident in-memory, producing remarkably fast results.
  • The Hub—a central location to launch the various elements of SAS Visual Analytics.
  • Mobile—a tool for viewing reports, connecting to servers and downloading information on the go.
  • Explorer—an ad hoc data discovery and visualization tool to explore and analyze data.
  • Designer—used to createstandard and custom reports and dashboards.
  • Environment Administration—used by administrators to manage users, security and data.

Server components run on Red Hat or SUSE Linux, and the mobile client is available for the iPad from the iTunes App Store. Other mobile devices will be supported in the future.

While the high end is not limited, SAS LASR Analytic Server reference configurations begin with an eight-blade server with 96 processor cores, 768 gigabytes memory and 4.8 terabytes (TB) of disk storage. The upper end of the reference configurations is 96 blades with 1,152 cores, 9.2 TB memory and 57.6 TB of disk storage.
